Northrop Frye regards archetypal criticism as prior in importance even though there is an element of pluralism in his thought. In his view, different critical methods are the results of different ways in which we approach literature. When we stand very close to a work of art, it will correspond to the rhetorical analysis of the new critics. At a little distance back we study the content of the work of art. As we move further back we become conscious of the organizing design. When we stand back and view literature, the archetypal organization can be seen clearly. In the Jungian psychology, an archetype is a fundamental patter nor form of human experience such as ‘mother’ ,’rebirth’ ,’spirit’ and trickster. As primordial image, it functions as an original, I functions as an original pattern or model from which others of the same kind are derived. An archetype for Frye is a typical or recurring image including developments in plot, character and setting. Any textual element or representational detail can form patterns indicating one or more archetypes. Such a pattern is found beneath the narratives and imagistic surface.the aim of an archetypal interpretationis to make explicit what remains implicit in the texts fragmented evocation of archetypes.the archetypal pattern connects one poem with the other and thereby helps to integrate our literary experience.such integration according to Frye can transform literary experience into cultural experience.
Frye views archetypal interpretation in terms of a temporal order of narrativeas embodied in the ‘monomyth’ or ‘quest’.it may be described as an attempt to find the treasure, involving journey, finding the treasure, involving journey, ultimately the activity of finding the self, to unite the conscious with the unconscious the goal of the hero.quest in fact is a narrative movement from total narcissism towards the hero’s individuation and relative autonomy.
