Julius Caesar is the masperpiece of the great playwright William Shakespeare. The speciality of this play is the role of Julius Caesar himself is very short, just confined to about three scenes and he dies in ACT 3 SCENE 1 but he still dominates the whole play with an invisible extraordinary force. His impact became all the more powerful once he was dead.Hence the name of the play is so significant.
The other principle characters are very well sculptured.Brutus is a noble person and he is constantly at war with himself over contrasting ideas and hence his mind is in conflict and his dialogues bring out his inner turmoil.Cassius is a shrewd manipulative character who loves brutus and hates caesar and he was the person who first makes the plan to kill Caesar.Antony the man devoted to various entertainment and enjoyment is beloved of Caesar. He is the king of eloquence and with a single, shrewd, extraordinary speech which consisted of figures of speech like oxymoron, paradoxes, hyperboles he destroys the image of the conspirators in the mind of the citizens who scream for their blood and they are forced to flee from Rome. Then Antony teams up with Caesar''s nephew Octavius, who displays great leadership qualities from the first and eventually he and Antony defeat the conspirators. All of them die and Brutus and Cassius commit suicide.
The plot of the drama is steady.A slow melancholic note permeates throughout the play and becomes extravagant in some places. The play shows many shades of character. The faults of the play are minor,Shakespeare borrows a little too much from Plutarch, but his originality cannot be ignored. The play is a little over-dramatic at places and their is also a supernatural element in the play so characteritic of Shakespearean tragedies. All in all it is one of the best plays ever written in the history of literature.
